WRBM 2012 Classic at Kentucky Lake on October 20 and 21
The White River Bass Masters (WRBM) held the 2012 Classic at Kentucky Lake Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21 respectively. Fall fishing at Kentucky Lake can be tremendous. However the weather, specifically the wind, can be treacherous on this large body of water. The WRBM anglers found a little bit of both during practice days and tournament days at this Classic. A few boats reported catching them real well in practice while others were troubled by the wind. The wind blew hard each day of practice and throughout the tournament. Traveling across the main lake was very tough…and rough. Consequently a majority of anglers stayed close to the launch and didn’t venture too far around Kentucky or Barkley Lakes….ultimately leading to low tournament weights.
After Day 1 of the tournament one boat seemed to be on the fish far better than the rest of the field. Bob Foxworthy (Foxy) came to the scales with 4 keepers for 8.71 pounds and his co-angler Rick Martlage came to the scales with 3 keepers for 6.74 pounds. For the rest of the field it appeared that Foxy and Martlage were competing for the Classic Win out of one boat. However, 8 other anglers brought keepers to the scales and were seemingly within reach of the leaders with a little luck. Dave Replogle was close with the Day 1 Big Bass, a 3.63 pound Largemouth. Others in the hunt included Craig Penwell and Tom Hart, each who had 2 keepers on Day 1
Day 2 arrived to more wind straight out of the south and the lake was rolling from the beginning. Ultimately Day 2 ended up being more of a struggle than Day 1 with only 4 anglers bringing in keepers to the scales. The field had long odds to catch Foxy and Martlage when the day began. With a tough bite those chances would be even longer as long as Foxy and Martlage brought in fish. Much to everyone’s surprise Foxy and Martlage both came up empty on Day 2. Foxy ended finishing in 2nd place with 8.71 pounds and Martlage slid to 4th place with 6.74 pounds. Trey Green made a strong run at the lead with two keepers including the Day 2 Big Bass, a 3.51 pound Largemouth, and finished the tournament with 7.85 pounds which was good for 3rd place. However it was Todd Irwin (TI) who came from way back and boated 3 keepers for 6.8 pounds that when added to his Day 1 catch gave him a total of 8.99 pounds and the 2012 Classic Win. This is TI’s second Classic Win in the club.
