Classic at Lake James – 10/12 & 10/13/2013

The White River Bass Masters (WRBM) held the 2013 Classic at Lake James on Saturday and Sunday, October 12 and 13 respectively. Lake James has had a reputation as a numbers lake but keeper bass were tough to find. That reputation came to fruition and the WRBM anglers found a keeper bite was very rare while catching high numbers of non-keepers was not hard at this Classic. After Day 1 Craig Penwell came to the scales with 2 keepers for 2.87 pounds which was good enough for the day 1 lead. Marvin Pope brought in the day 1 Big Bass, a 1.56 pound Largemouth, and good enough for second place after Day 1. Others in the hunt included David Replogle and Danny Spratt.
Day 2 arrived and the field had high spirits knowing that no one was out of this competition. Ultimately Day 2 ended up being more productive than Day 1 with many more keepers coming to the scales. Ultimately, Brent Hummel made the most of the opportunity and came from behind to win the 2013 WRBM Classic. Brent brought 3 bass to the scales on Day 2 weighing in at 5.61 pounds. The dock talk revealed that Brent worked over one area all day and caught all of his fish on a Hula Popper, a classic popping type topwater lure. Numerous younger anglers in the club have never even heard of a Hula Popper which divulges more about the mystique of the lure. Following Brent to finish in 2nd Place was the day 1 leader Craig Penwell who finished with a two day total of 4.64 pounds. Coming in 3rd place with a two day total of 4.57 pounds and the day two Big Bass weighing in at 3.26 pounds was Kevin Voorhis.
